The Four-Day Energy Experiment: A Simple Way to Discover What Fuels You Best

Smiling woman in a kitchen holds a green smoothie beside a counter with fruit, berries, and a blender.

Have you ever noticed how some meals leave you feeling steady and clear-headed, while others send you straight into a mid-afternoon slump? You're not imagining it — and you don't need a nutrition degree to figure out why. You just need four days and a little curiosity.

That's the idea behind the Four-Day Energy Experiment, a simple self-guided practice I use with my coaching clients to help them understand exactly what their body needs to feel its best.

Why This Matters

So much of feeling "off" — the brain fog, the crash after lunch, the 3 p.m. crawl toward the coffee pot — comes down to how our meals are built, and specifically, how much protein is in them and where it's coming from. But no two bodies respond the same way. The only way to really know what works for you is to test it out and pay attention.

That's exactly what this experiment is designed to do.

How It Works

Over four days, you'll eat according to a simple rotating pattern:

  • Day One: A mix of no-protein and animal/plant protein meals

  • Day Two: The same mix, reordered

  • Day Three: Protein at every meal

  • Day Four: Plant-based protein at every meal

After each meal, you'll simply check in with yourself twice — once right after eating, and again two hours later — and note whether your energy went up or down. That's it. No calorie counting, no complicated tracking. Just noticing.

If you're vegetarian or vegan, you can substitute your favorite plant-based protein anywhere animal protein is suggested. And if you already have a good sense of what works for your body, feel free to skip the tracking altogether and just use the meal ideas for inspiration.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Be curious, not critical. This isn't about doing it "right" — it's about listening to what your body is already telling you.

Every body is different. What energizes one person might weigh another down. That's the whole point of testing it out for yourself rather than following a generic rule.

Snacking is okay if you need it. The experiment works best without snacking between meals, but if you're feeling foggy or shaky, don't white-knuckle it — have a healthy snack and take care of yourself first.

What You'll Walk Away With

By the end of the four days, you'll have real, personal data about which proteins — and how much — help you feel steady, clear, and energized. That insight becomes a foundation you can build every future meal around.

This is a small step, but it's a meaningful one. Understanding your own energy patterns is one of the simplest, most empowering tools you can use on the path to better blood sugar balance and lasting health.
